If you've moved to a web plan (Pro+ Lite or Pro+), stop running the Tradecopia desktop app on the same broker accounts. Running both at the same time copies every trade twice and doubles the size of your follower positions, which exposes you to more risk than you intend.
You might need this article if:
You've upgraded to the web version and still have the desktop app installed
You're not sure whether you can keep using the desktop app after moving to a web plan
Your follower accounts started taking double the contracts after you switched to a web plan
You want to know what to do with your old desktop installation
You want a backup way to keep trading if your web instance ever has a problem
Why you should not run both at the same time
Your leader account is the account you trade in directly. Your follower accounts are the accounts that automatically copy those trades. Tradecopia is the trade copier that sends each leader trade to your followers.
When you are on a web plan, your copier already runs on Tradecopia's infrastructure. If you also open the desktop app and connect it to the same accounts, you now have two copiers watching the same leader and sending the same instructions. Every trade you place is copied twice:
The web version sends the trade to your followers once
The desktop app sends the same trade again
Your followers receive two instructions to open the same position, so they end up with roughly double the contracts your multiplier is set to produce. That doubles your position size and your exposure without you choosing to take on that risk.
For prop firm traders this is especially costly. A funded account has strict loss limits set by the prop firm. Double-sized positions can breach those limits far faster than expected and put the account at risk over a move you never intended to size that large.
The brokers behave identically here, so this applies to every supported broker (Tradovate, NinjaTrader, TopStepX, and Rithmic).
What to do once you're on a web plan
Once your Pro+ Lite or Pro+ instance is active, treat the web version as your only running copier:
Close the Tradecopia desktop app if it is open.
Uninstall the desktop app from your computer. This is the safest option, because it removes any chance of the desktop copier starting up in the background and connecting to your accounts.
Use only your web version from now on. You access it through your dedicated link. For a refresher on logging in, see How do I access Tradecopia Pro+ Lite or Pro+ for the first time?.
If you would rather keep the desktop app installed instead of removing it, the rule is simple: never have the desktop app and your web version connected to the same accounts at the same time. Uninstalling removes the risk entirely, which is why it is the recommended step.
When you can use the desktop app as a fallback
The web version is reliable and is designed to be your everyday setup. The desktop app exists only as a temporary fallback for the rare case where you cannot access your web version and need to keep trading in the meantime.
If you ever need to use it that way, keep the two versions completely separate:
Make sure your web instance is stopped, not just closed in your browser. You can stop it from the VM Instance section of your account on the Tradecopia portal.
Confirm the web version is no longer connected to your broker accounts.
Only then open the desktop app and connect. If you uninstalled it, reinstall it first. See How to reinstall Tradecopia or do a clean reset.
When your web version is available again, close and disconnect the desktop app before you start the web instance back up.
The single rule underneath all of this: only one copier should ever be connected to your accounts at a time. If both are connected, you are back to duplicate entries.
If you're already seeing duplicate or doubled positions
If your followers are already receiving doubled orders or positions larger than your multiplier should produce, a second copier is almost certainly still connected. Close every copy of Tradecopia, place a test trade on your leader, and check whether it still copies. For the full step-by-step check and how to clear the duplicate connection, see Why are there duplicate orders or oversized positions on my follower accounts?.
If you've followed these steps and are still seeing doubled positions, contact the Tradecopia support team with your account email and the affected accounts, and our team will help you track down the second connection.
