In copy trading, your broker is the final step in the chain: it decides whether and how each order fills. This article explains the broker's role, why different brokers behave differently, and why copying across brokers or between different account types can produce small, normal differences. It is background to set accurate expectations. It is not trading or financial advice.
You might need this article if:
You want to understand what your broker decides versus what the copier decides
You copy across more than one broker and want to know what differences to expect
You copy between a live account and a prop firm or demo account and want to understand any differences
You want realistic expectations for how brokers affect your fills
Your broker makes the final decision
When you copy a trade, the copier's job ends the moment it delivers the order instruction to a broker. From that point, your broker takes over and makes the final decision: it fills the order, fills part of it, or does not fill it, at whatever price its own execution engine and available liquidity allow at that instant.
This is true for the leader and for every follower. Each account sits behind its own broker, and each broker makes its own independent decision. The copier delivers the same instruction; the brokers decide the outcome. For a fuller breakdown of what the copier controls versus the broker, see What does Tradecopia control, and what does my broker control?.
Different brokers behave differently
No two brokers are identical. Each one runs its own servers, has its own order routing, its own available liquidity, and its own market data feed. Brokers commonly host their servers close to exchange infrastructure to keep things fast, though the exact locations vary and are not something we can confirm for each broker.
Because of these differences, the same instruction sent to two brokers at the same moment can fill at a slightly different time or price. When you copy across different brokers, expect small differences between those accounts. In practice this is usually a tick or two, not a large gap. It reflects the normal differences between brokers, not a problem with the copying. For why fills differ in more detail, see Why do follower orders fill at a different price than the leader?.
Live accounts and demo or prop firm accounts
Account type matters too. Many prop firm accounts, including funded accounts and evaluation accounts, run as demo accounts at the broker level. That is normal, and it is how most prop firm programs work.
What is useful to know is that a demo account and a live account are not wired to exactly the same market plumbing. Their data feeds can differ, and the point where orders are executed can differ as well. So when you copy between a live account and a demo or prop firm account, you may see small differences between them, for the same reasons that brokers differ from each other.
This is not a statement that one account type is better or worse than another. It simply means the two are fed and executed through slightly different paths, so small differences are expected. What this means for your expectations
Putting it together:
Your broker, not the copier, decides the final fill on every account.
Copying across different brokers can show small differences between accounts, usually a tick or two.
Copying between live and demo or prop firm accounts can show small differences too, because they run through slightly different market plumbing.
These differences are a normal part of trading across independent brokers and account types. They are small and expected, not a sign that something is wrong. Understanding them gives you an accurate picture of what you are seeing across your accounts.
