Why is my leader account showing more contracts than I placed?

Tradecopia cannot open or modify positions on a leader account. If the leader shows an unexpected position size, the cause is on the trading platform or broker side.

Tradecopia reads from your leader account and writes to your follower accounts. It has no ability to open, modify, or increase positions on the leader. If your leader account is showing a larger position than you intended to place, Tradecopia is not the cause — the issue is on your trading platform or broker side.

You might be experiencing this if:

  • Your leader account shows more contracts than you placed

  • A position opened at double or triple the size you intended

  • Your order went through at a quantity you didn't set

  • Followers are copying a position size that looks larger than what you placed on the leader

How to confirm where the issue is

Before investigating further, check which accounts are showing the unexpected position size.

What you see

What it means

Leader account shows wrong size, followers match the leader

Not a Tradecopia issue. The position originated on the leader — Tradecopia replicated it correctly to followers. Investigate your trading platform.

Leader account shows wrong size, followers are flat or unaffected

Not a Tradecopia issue. Tradecopia only replicates what it sees on the leader. The oversized position was placed before Tradecopia had anything to replicate.

Followers show wrong size, leader account is correct

This may be a Tradecopia issue. Contact the Tradecopia support team with the affected accounts and the time the unexpected fill occurred.

Why the leader account might show the wrong size

Hotkey or one-click quantity misconfiguration — your trading platform's hotkeys or one-click order panel may have a quantity setting higher than intended. A single keypress or click submits that quantity regardless of what you expect.

Bracket order duplication — some trading platforms submit both an entry order and a bracket simultaneously in a way that can result in a duplicate fill if the platform configuration is not set correctly.

Accidental double-submission — the order was submitted twice, either through a double-click, a key being pressed twice, or a brief platform lag that caused the input to register more than once.

Two replication systems running at the same time — if you are using another trade copier or your broker's built-in copy feature alongside Tradecopia, both systems will react to the same leader fill. The result is that your follower accounts receive the trade twice — once from each system — which doubles the position. From your perspective it appears that "Tradecopia placed too many contracts," but the oversizing is the combined output of two independent systems acting on the same event.

Note — switching from a cloud trade copier: If you recently moved to Tradecopia from another cloud copier, make sure the old connections are fully removed on that platform — not just on your broker side. Even when accounts appear deleted, connections can remain active in the background on the previous copier's end. Refresh their dashboard multiple times and confirm the accounts are completely gone before connecting those accounts to Tradecopia. If two trade copiers still have access to the same accounts simultaneously, trades will be duplicated and positions will appear larger than expected.

Only one replication system should ever be active on the same set of follower accounts at a time.

What to do

  1. Check whether a previous cloud copier is still connected. If you recently switched to Tradecopia from another cloud copier, log into that platform and confirm the accounts are fully removed — not just appearing deleted. Refresh their dashboard multiple times to verify the connections are completely gone before continuing.

  2. Check whether any other replication system is currently active on your accounts — if so, disable it and test with a single follower and a limit order placed far from market price before resuming normal trading.

  3. Check your trading platform's hotkey configuration, one-click quantity settings, and bracket order settings for anything that could have caused the unexpected size.

  4. Contact your trading platform's support team if you cannot identify the cause — they have access to the order submission history on the platform side that Tradecopia cannot see.

If you have checked all of the above and still cannot identify what caused the oversized position, contact the Tradecopia support team with the affected account details and the time of the unexpected fill — the team can review the session log to confirm whether Tradecopia sent anything to the leader account.
